Back in 2002, the Italian automaker debuted the iconic red-coated, mid-engine berlinetta as a tribute to its beloved founder, Enzo Ferrari. Since then, the auto has impressed enthusiasts with its ability to advance from zero to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds and reach top speeds around 221 mph. Now, Ferrari has officially announced that the Ferrari Enzo model's yet-to-be-named successor will go green with an ultra-advanced gasoline-electric powertrain.
Set to debut in 2013, the forthcoming Ferrari hybrid will enter the luxury sports car segment with all the refined performance of a gas-only Ferrari auto and a great deal of efficiency to boot. Armedeo Felisa, Ferrari CEO, explains, "We are entering the market with our Formula One-derived hybrid system, which will slash fuel consumption and increase performance."1
Though the hybrid system will inevitably add a bit of extra weight to the ultra-fast Ferrari auto, Felisa assures industry experts that engineers will balance out the burden by shaving off pounds in other places.
