Do you ever notice that new Ferrari vehicles somehow look fast even when they're sitting completely still? It's this sensuous body style and dynamic appearance that draws many die-hard Ferrari enthusiasts in. Sadly, Boardwalk Ferrari must share that the venerable man responsible for creating this classic Ferrari look has passed away: Sergio Pininfarina.
Throughout his 85 years of life, Pininfarina helped transform his father's Italian engineering design firm from a small shop to a global design nameplate. Since the business began back in the 1950's, Pininfarina and Ferrari have been inextricably linked by a shared love of producing speedy-fast, stylish autos. Specifically, Sergio took the Pininfarina reigns from his father in 1966 and became the man in charge of all aspects of the autos' design.
Of the relationship between Pininfarina and Ferrari, Luca di Montezemolo, Ferrari chairman, says, "Calling his [Pininfarina] relation with Ferrari legendary is insufficient."1 The two flourished together in a partnership that completely transformed the way stunning Ferrari models are made. Pininfarina himself once said, "Good design equals longevity, and the better the design, the longer its life."2
Out of the many models the iconic auto lover oversaw, some of the most noteworthy were the 1968 Daytona, the 1984 Testarossa, the 1987 F40, and the 2002 Enzo supercar. The 2002 Enzo marked Pininfarina's last major contribution before his passing and was inspired by the alluring, low-slung bodies of Ferrari champion Formula 1 racers.
While we at Boardwalk Ferrari are sad to hear of Sergio Pininfarina's passing, we look forward to many years of honoring his remarkable contributions to the Ferrari brand.
